Yesterday I had brought my Mini Australian shepherd for an emergency walk-in visit…
I had been at work and when I got home I found that my dog had grabbed my travel bag off the counter and tore it open ( Literally can’t even use it anymore) and ate a large amount of 500mg Tums and possibly some Tylenol.
When I got to the vet and saw the technician AND doctor I showed them the crime bag and all the medication bottles/ pills as requested.. but they didn’t even grab the bag from me to look at the bottles and asked me to look at everything myself to determine how much she took and the milligrams.. Ok
After inducing my dog to throw up, the doctor came in and explained that I needed to take her to an ER and to call poison control to see what our options were, which I couldn’t get ahold of poison control at all!, the doctor then said they didn’t have any of the proper medication to help her there and said they could push fluids but if I had done that then an already $221 bill just for a visit and vomit would have turned into $449 dollars… this place is a very stern with money, they don’t allow next day payments and sadly that’s when my husband and I got paid and so I just couldn’t afford it. Needless to say, the moment my hesitation with additional charges started is when things went downhill and I had been at this walk in visit for 3 hours……
After explaining my stressful situation financially to the doctor and telling her that my husband would like me to bring her home and try to make her eat and drink fluids to see if that would help….
she gave me a look and gave some standard advice for care when I got home but then she proceeded to tell me that if she dies or if we need to put her down tomorrow then to let her know…very nonchalant and blunt.
I understand that the situation was bad and maybe I didn’t seem distraught enough because of how mentally and physically exhausted I was on top of my stress from my dogs actions… but this isn’t the first time the Doctor made a horrible comment without any empathy and when I got to the front desk to pay I started crying and was almost hysterical when I drove away. My baby looked worse when we left compared to how she was when we got there..she was still very aware and walking around and smiling before and when we left she had droll spilling from her mouth due to the vomiting, she couldn’t walk straight and she was exhausted ( VERY different from the standard crazy Aussie energy), she crawled on my lap while driving and fell asleep.
I will never come back to this vet :(
Doggy update:
This morning ( 5:30am) my baby is running around and playing with her ball, she is eating and drinking and even went potty with no complications, she is smiling and very very happy… 😭🙏
